How to lock your bike
A good lock helps, and so does the way you use it. These steps cover where to park, what to lock and how to combine locks.
Choose where to park
Lock to something permanent, with bike racks as the ideal choice.
- If there is no rack, use a structure firmly planted in the ground, such as a light post or a cemented in park bench.
- If you park at night, choose a well lit area.
Lock the right parts
Secure both the frame and the back wheel, not just the front wheel or the frame.
- For extra protection, remove the front wheel and lock it along with the back wheel.
- Pair a cable lock with a U lock to protect removable parts such as the seat.
Use a sturdy main lock
Use at least one sturdy, high quality lock that is hard to cut or break. Chain locks and U locks are the hardest to disable.
- Using two lock types together makes locking up easier and theft harder.
- Some riders add a long chain or cable lock to their main lock to make securing the bike easier.
A quick checklist
- Permanent object or rack
- Frame and back wheel locked together
- Front wheel locked too, or taken with you
- Well lit spot if you park at night
